The College of Health Sciences (CHS) of the Catanduanes State University (CatSU) marked a historic moment on January 30, 2023, with the holding of its first Nursing Clinical Graduation at the CatSU gymnasium.The day began with a Eucharistic Celebration at the Risen Christ Chapel, led by Father Eric John T. Rojas.After the Mass, the opening ceremony officially kicked off with a welcome address from the Dean of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Joel T. Olfindo. Prof. Mary Ellaine T. Tapel presented the candidates for Clinical Graduation, while former College Dean and Senior Faculty member, Dr. Jocelyn Ll. Jordan led the lighting of the Nightingale’s Lamp.“Today marks a special day in your journey towards becoming professional nurses. Keep striving to reach your goals and make your ambitions your inspiration. I thank the parents for their unwavering support and for keeping their children in prayer,” said Dean Olfindo.The Ring Hop Ceremony, a highlight of the day, saw the graduates, assisted by the Dean, and Dr. Lily P. Custodio, Executive Vice President (EVP) received their rings. In his message, Dr. Custodio expressed her pride and joy for the graduates, most especially for their parents. She also gave challenged the student nurses to bring excellence in having top notchers very soon.During the ceremony, several awards were also given to the students, including the Leadership Award, Achievement Award, Best in RLE award, Best in Case Study, Best in Thesis, and Outstanding Student Nurse. EVP Dr. Custodio, Dean Olfindo, Dr. Alma V. Tabirara, Program Chair, and Prof. Tapel, Clinical Supervisor, presented the awards and certificates.Dr. Ma. Pamela S. Viñas, Education Supervisor II of the CHED Regional Office and a College of Nursing alumna, served as the keynote speaker of the event.Dr. Viñas encouraged future nurses to challenge themselves to bring success to their chosen profession. She emphasized the importance of being prepared and stressed that success can only be achieved through dedication, commitment, and passion.Meanwhile, Ms. Hannah Eden Santos, the Outstanding Student Nurse, Class of 2022, delivered a message of gratitude. Dr. Jordan recited the Nursing Pledge of Allegiance, while the CHS faculty members performed a musical number. Dr. Alma V. Tabirara gave the closing remarks, wrapping up the celebration of the student's hard work and dedication.The Clinical Graduation marked the end of the students' clinical exposure in hospitals and the community for the Class of 2022. The students completed a total of 2703 duty hours over four years, fulfilling a requirement for their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The Catanduanes State University (CatSU) officials, student leaders, and representatives from the Philippine National Police (PNP) - Virac Municipal Police Station conducted a consultative meeting today, February 1, to strengthen the Anti-Drug Campaign awareness in the University.The meeting, presided over by Dr. Maria Edna R. Inigo, the Vice President for Administrative and Financial Affairs (VP-AFA), also addressed other security concerns, and to find possible interventions to tighten the safety, security, peace, and order in the campus.The Philippine National Police (PNP), represented by PSSG Antonio B Aquino, MCAD PNCO/KASIMBAYAN Focal Person, and PCPT Francis T. Tabo, DCOP, Virac MPS, discussed the significant security issues and the administration's plan to create a safer and more peaceful community.The CatSU Student Body Organizations, led by Hon. Angelo Piolo M. Laynes, FCSC President and Student Regent, also shared their observations and suggested the importance of wearing proper uniform and school IDs for easy identification and for the security of the students as well. Prof. John Cyrus B. Francis, the OSADS Director, also provided his recommendations on necessary interventions. The Director of the Center for International Relations and Continuing Professional Development Services (CIRCPDS), Ms. Zyra Mae T. Tumala, has qualified for the 3-Week Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Training Program under the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP).The training program, which started on January 20, 2023, consists of asynchronous activities that participants will complete independently, as well as three mandatory 90-minute synchronous meetings. The program will conclude on February 3, 2023.Of the 200 applicants from 50 member institutions in 12 UMAP countries, Tumala was selected as one of 80 participants. She expressed her excitement and honor to represent CatSU in this international academic endeavor.“I feel honored and elated to represent our beloved CatSU in this international academic endeavor. I am excited about the learnings and be able to share it as well” Tumala shared.The COIL program aims to provide participants with increased self-awareness, cross-cultural communication skills, abilities to work in interdisciplinary teams, and virtual study-abroad experiences. The Catanduanes State University will host a two-day musical play directed by award-winning Director, Atty. Vince M. Tañada at the CatSU Gymnasium on February 5 and 6, 2023 at 8:00AM, 11:00AM, 2:00PM, and 5:00PM."Bayani Love, Heroes in Concert," is an artistic presentation of the struggles of our national heroes as they fought for freedom for the people they loved. Written by Tañada, the play is a jukebox musical that features love stories from known national heroes such as Lapu-Lapu and Bulakna, Gabriela and Diego Silang, Antonio Luna and Nellie Bousted, Juan Luna and Paz Pardo de Tavera, Jose Rizal and Josephine Bracken, and Andres Bonifacio and Gregoria De Jesús.The production will be staged by the Philippine Stagers Foundation (PSF), a highly acclaimed organization known for its outstanding musical productions. PSF has been recognized by the TAYO Awards Foundation, Dangal ng Bansa by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, and the Aliw Awards and Broadway World Awards for its multi-award-winning productions. In 2013, PSF was awarded the Best Program for Culture and the Arts at the 22nd KBP Golden Dove Awards.Atty. Tañada, a highly decorated awardee in FAMAS, STAR, GOLDEN DOVE, CMMA, and ALIW, and the award-winning Director of the movie KATIPS, hopes that students and teachers in the island province of Catanduanes will be able to witness the play and learn more about history, culture, and values through the medium of theater arts.Tañada, who is also the Founder and Artistic Director of PSF, assures that the musical play will benefit the audience not only academically, as it focuses on a holistic approach to studying Modern Literature and Philippine History, but it is also an artistic masterpiece in theater production that has never been seen before in the Philippines.Dr. Ramon Felipe Sarmiento, Vice President for Research, Extension, and Production Affairs (VP REPA), is thrilled about the upcoming musical play that the University will be hosting. The VP REPA expressed his excitement over the rare opportunity to host and witness a musical play, and emphasized the importance of promoting it to students as a unique experience. In addition, Dr. Sarmiento, a multi-talented writer, screenwriter, and director with several awards to his name, sees this musical play as a chance to relaunch the University's cultural group, the Hablon Dawani. He believes that the event will help bring attention to the group and encourage more students to get involved in the university's cultural and artistic scene.
The College of Education (COEd) Teacher Education Department at Catanduanes State University (CatSU) gathered for a seminar-workshop on the enhancement of the Outcomes-based course syllabus on January 18, 2022.The seminar-workshop, called “ONWARD CoED: OBE Course Syllabus Revisit and Enhancement Seminar-Workshop”, was aimed at ensuring the effective delivery of instructions in the upcoming 2nd semester of the academic year (AY) 2022-2023.During the activity, faculty members who handle the same courses worked together in the preparation of syllabus to ensure that the learning objectives, activities, and assessments are aligned.According to Dr. Maria Sheila R. Gregorio, Dean of the College of Education, the activity was prepared in relation to a seminar-workshop on TOS/Test Construction held last December 1-2, 2022, where one of the findings in the deliberation was that the objectives or desired learning outcomes to the teaching and learning activities, and the type of assessment were misaligned.“COEd, being a Center for Development, aims to continue the pursuit of quality and excellence through collaborations, skills enhancement, and training for its faculty members. This seminar-workshop is one of the many efforts that the COEd undertakes to ensure the quality of education at CatSU,” Dean Gregorio said.Two of the COEd’s young and promising professors, Dr. Jose Z. The College of Health Sciences at the Catanduanes State Colleges and the Eastern Bicol Medical Center (EBMC) held an orientation for second, third, and fourth-year students on January 25, 2023, to prepare the students in their Related Learning Experience (RLE).EBMC OIC Chief Nurse, Ms. Salve Tabo, led the orientation and discussed the hospital's rules and regulations, protocols, and organizational structure with the Bachelor of Science in Nursing students. She also emphasized the importance of charting and answered any questions raised by the students.Ms. Tabo noted that RLE is a crucial part of the nursing discipline and allows students to apply the theories and knowledge they have learned in the classroom to real-life situations.EBMC's Dr. Jay Sorreda also spoke about the hospital's Infection and Control, and Prevention Protocols. The hospital has a mandatory orientation policy before students are allowed to start their duties. Dr. Sorreda expressed his satisfaction that the orientation was successfully completed for the students."We want to make sure our students are prepared for this learning opportunity that will advance their competencies in various health situations. Catanduanes State University's College of Education (CoED) held its second annual Pinning and Torch Lighting ceremony for the class of 2022-2023 on January 25, 2023, at the Virac Cathedral.The event was a milestone for 263 student interns from all programs such as BEEd, BCAED, BPED, and BSED in Math, Science, English, Filipino, Social Sciences, Values Education, and BTVTED-FSM, as it marked their commitment to lifelong learning and professionalism in the field of education. The ceremony symbolized that the recipients have achieved the required "Character, Confidence, and Competence" to engage in practice teaching.The ceremony was attended by the student interns, their proud parents, and members of the CatSU academic council. Dr. Lily P. Custodio, former Vice President for Academic Affairs and current Executive Vice President (EVP), led the candle-lighting ceremony, symbolizing that the ideals and core values of the university will guide the student interns in their teaching profession.In her speech, Dr. Custodio reminded the student interns of the challenges they will face in their practice teaching, such as preparing lessons, managing student behavior, writing reports, and making a difference in the lives of their future students. The Office of the National Service Training Program (NSTP) at Catanduanes State University (CatSU), under the direction of Prof. Emlyn C. Lanon, conducted a General Orientation and Meet & Greet for NSTP student trainees for the 2nd semester of 2022-2023 academic year The event that took place at the university gymnasium on January 28, 2023, aimed to inform new NSTP coordinators, instructors, and support staff about their responsibilities in training and seminars, ensuring proper implementation of NSTP at the university.Prof. Lanon led the first half of the orientation, which began with an orientation dialogue between all faculty trainers and a discussion of the achievements from the first semester and its evaluation. She also provided a brief overview of the legal basis and revised IRR of NSTP and presented the topics and learning activities for the second semester.The second half of the event, the Meet & Greet Proper, allowed faculty trainers to meet the students, finalize class lists, schedules, and room assignments, conduct student profiling, and elect new class officers.The orientation had a total of 2,453 student-trainees from the nine (9) colleges, together with their respective faculty trainers. Also present are the 2 NSTP Coordinator and the NSTP/NSRC Director. The College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) at the Catanduanes State University (CatSU) recently hosted its first annual Student Research Colloquium from January 25-27, 2023 at the CatSU Auditorium.The goal of the event was to provide students with a platform to showcase their research projects, improve their public speaking abilities, and receive feedback from experts in the field.Participated in by students and faculty from Civil Engineering and Computer Engineering, the third-year students served as facilitators, with Engr. Dexter M. Toyado and Engr. Ronnie B. Santelices as the overall coordinator. Panelists included Ms. Mae Ezra Abundo, Director of Information Technology Services (ITS), and Mr. Neil B. Araojo, Technical Specialist of ITS."Students have the opportunity to work closely with a mentor, who can be a faculty member or experienced researcher, through the faculty-initiated research colloquium," says Engr. Nanette Valeza, Focal Person of BSECE. "We are grateful for the support of the Information Technology Services in providing feedback to our students and enhancing their research outputs."Ms. Abundo, in her message, emphasized the significance of research in filling knowledge gaps and encouraged students to develop their research skills. The colloquium was designed to provide fourth-year students with an opportunity to present their research results and improve their presentation abilities.“The Research Colloquium is an ideal place to learn something new, hone problem-solving skills, and challenge themselves in new ways through research. We also want to allow student researchers to share important information and findings from their studies with the academic community”, Ms. Abundo said.Mr. Araojo, on the other hand, added that the colloquium was a valuable chance for students to become familiar with the research world and prepare for their final defense. He noted that it allowed students to revise their projects, produce writing samples, and become comfortable with the academic conference environment.The overall coordinators of the research colloquium, Engr.
