CatSU ELSCOM, CHUMSS, enhance English Language Curriculum for Global Competitiveness

The English Language and Speech Communication Center (ELSCOM) and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUMSS) organized an assessment of the English Language Curriculum for Global Competitiveness, today, April 24, 2023.  The event involved faculty members of the Languages Department and language teachers from the College of Education, Laboratory Schools, and CatSU Panganiban Campus.Topics discussed included Global Language Standards, presented by Prof. Romeleen Go-Vela, Program Chair of Bachelor of Arts in English Language (BAEL); an overview of CEFR by Prof. Reashiela L. Khan, Director of ELSCOM; CEFR-Based Competencies by Prof. Francis B. Tatel, Faculty of the Languages Department, and a review of CatSU's CEFR-based English-related syllabi. The afternoon schedule featured a workshop, presentations, and a SWOT analysis.CatSU President, Dr. Patrick Alain T. Azanza, graced the opening program and emphasized the importance of internalizing education at CatSU for achieving the university's vision.“The internalization of education at CatSU is crucial for achieving our vision for CatSU, and the Language Center plays a significant role in this process. We wanted it to be on par with global standards with those of other top universities worldwide,” Dr. Azanza said. “A notable concern in the field of Human Resources is the lack of effective communication skills. Many individuals may be skilled and intelligent, but their inability to express themselves effectively puts them at a disadvantage compared to graduates from other universities. This is what we need to address in our university,” he added. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, also known as CEFR, CEF, or CEFRL, serves as a standard guideline for evaluating the progress of foreign language learners throughout Europe and, increasingly, in other nations. The framework's primary purpose is to simplify the assessment of language proficiency for educational institutions and employers when considering candidates for educational admission or employment.  #FJBT

After an in-depth accreditation task force training to prepare the college for the incoming accreditation in their BEEd and BSEd programs last November 5, 2022, the College of Education is hopeful that they would be able to have these programs qualify for phase II Level IV Accreditation which will be surveyed by the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines, Inc. (AACCUP) on February 2023.With the training conducted by COEd’s Accreditation Task Force, the team was able to revisit the accreditation process prescribed by the AACCUP. They were also prepared to be acquainted with the specific roles and responsibilities in their assigned areas, and the readiness of the programs in the consideration of its strengths and weaknesses. For Dr. Maria Sheila R. Gregorio, Dean of the College of Education, their preparation is so essential in achieving the goal that they want for the college. She also shared the advantages that COEd will get once the programs are qualified for the said accreditation. “COEd will be qualified for Center for Excellence (COE) as we conform to high standards of instruction, research, and extension. It will also be possible for the BEEd and BSEd programs to know its strengths and weaknesses and what other aspects it needs to develop,” Dr. Gregorio said.  #FBJT

Laboratorians donate smartphones to the needy students of CatSU

The Catanduanes State Colleges (now Catanduanes State University) Laboratory Schools (CSCLS) Batch ‘97, Singapore Chapter has donated smartphones to four deserving students from the College of Education and College of Agriculture and Fisheries. Based on the recommendation of Deans from the 2 Colleges, four students were selected as beneficiaries: Nichico M. Canaria (CoED), Janine DL. Barro (CoED), Anthony Carl T. Pamplona (CAF), and Jake V. Tabirao (CAF). The donation was made possible through the efforts of Dra. Jenevy Lizaso, a CSCLS Batch ‘99 alumna, who managed to get sponsors from Batch ’97. The smartphones were handed over to the students last January 18, 2021 by the CatSU Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Maria S. Tugano together with the Deans of the College of Education and College of Agriculture and Fisheries, Dr. Rosana S. Abundo, and Dr. Epifanio S. Rubio respectively, and some faculty members. A beneficiary, Jake V. Tabirao, 2nd year BS Agriculture student, said he is so grateful for the donation, as it will help him with the modules currently sent thru online modes, which previously he can do only after borrowing a phone from a friend thus, resulting to late submission of required outputs.  The University, on its part, extends its sincere appreciation to the sponsors who donated the devices which will definitely serve a bigger purpose – to help ease the burden faced by some students during these trying times brought about by the pandemic and super typhoon Rolly. #JManlagnit

Catanduanes State U conducts faculty training on Online learning management system

Catanduanes State U conducts faculty training on Online learning management system

The “new normal” has taken the doorsteps of schools. So with the Catanduanes State University (CatSU), an ISO-certified public higher educational institution in Catanduanes as it prepares for the coming academic year, 2020-2021.  Insofar as enrolment and holding of classes face-to-face as would the usual way lessons were provided prior to the Covid-19 scare, measures to sustain the learning system in the University led by Dr. Minerva I. Morales, CatSU President, were drawn as early as the Luzon-wide quarantine declaration began on March 17, 2020. The initiative was a prior step while the trend obtaining developments of the virus spread continuously pose alarm to the health and safety of all.  Dr. Maria S. Tugano, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, said that based from the present scenario, the University looks at providing alternative mode of learning based from validation conducted in the eleven towns by the Management Information System (MIS) Office concerning internet capability in the province where there has been “unstable to no connectivity” at all in many areas.  Hence, full online delivery of lessons would not be that feasible, although she added as an option, that faculty members are encouraged to adapt flexible learning approaches noting further that the University could deliver the lessons on the ground through modules. Meanwhile, to prepare for the online platform, Dr. Tugano announced that the University staged its training in the implementation of Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) which started June 22, 2020 on per batch basis across the eight Colleges until July 28, 2020.  Participants were 326 regular, temporary, contract of service, contractual and part-time faculty members from the Main Campus and its Panganiban Campus, including the Laboratory Schools.  The training designed by the University’s College of Information and Communications Technology (CICT) led by its Dean, Prof. Maria Concepcion S. Vera, was held at the CICT Computer Laboratory Rooms, the College of Engineering and the College of Industrial Technology.  Resource persons were select faculty members from CICT and the College of Education.  Dean Vera explained that the LMS can be used as a vast repository where information can be stored and tracked where anyone with a user account and password can access these online learning resources, whenever, wherever. “For self-hosted LMS, users are required to install the LMS software on their hard drive or access to the University server. Whatever is the installation option, the LMS users fall into two categories: first, online learners who use the LMS to participate in online training courses; and, second, the e-Learning faculty team who relies on the LMS platform to distribute information and update the online training content,” Dean Vera said.  As students nowadays are becoming more adept with information technology, Dean  Vera added that once students are online, they can access and download on the web the course materials and other learning resources which they could read at any time and take examinations depending on their learning progress, and so long as they are connected online.  On the other hand, soon that the LMS becomes operational, the University’s Management Information System (MIS) office is expected to support the network being its site administrator that will take charge of its maintenance.
