In a dual-purpose session aimed at fostering nationalism and health consciousness, the Catanduanes State University (CatSU) University Student Council organized a seminar titled “West Philippine Sea (WPS) is Ours: Our Seas, Our Rights, Our Future” on February 25.
The event coincided with the national commemoration of the EDSA People Power Revolution, serving as a symbolic backdrop for discussions on sovereignty and civic responsibility.
In partnership with the Office of Student Affairs Development Services (OSADS), the university invited 1st Lt. Michael John A. Pinuela of the 14th Special Forces (Swordfish) Company, Philippine Army, to lead the maritime awareness session.
Guided by the theme “Karagatan ng Pilipinas, Karapatan ng Pilipino,” Lt. Pinuela emphasized the critical importance of understanding the Philippines’ maritime rights and territorial integrity. The discussion sought to empower students with knowledge regarding national sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea and the role of the youth in upholding these rights.
Transitioning from national security to personal well-being, the seminar also featured Dr. Marian Lianko Tresvalles from the Eastern Bicol Medical Center – Ginaha Wellness Center.
Dr. Tresvalles conducted an informative session on sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV and other STDs. Her discussion focused on breaking the social stigma surrounding these conditions and promoting informed, responsible health choices among the student body.
