German physicist, climate expert delivers lecture at CatSU

SDG 13: Climate Action

February 27, 2026

To deepen the local understanding of the shifting global environment, the Catanduanes State University (CatSU) hosted a lecture on “Global Climate Change and its Potential Impacts on the Tropical Region” on February 27.

The event, held at the CatSU Accreditation Room, featured world-renowned physicist and atmospheric scientist Dr. Alfred “Ali” Wiedensohler as the keynote speaker.

The lecture was a collaborative effort between the College of Agriculture and Fisheries (CAF) and the Center for International Relations, Continuing Professional Development, and Services (CIRCPDS).

Dr. Wiedensohler, a visiting professor from Leipzig, Germany, is a leading figure in the study of aerosols and their critical role in air quality and climate regulation. He currently serves as the Director of the ACTRIS European Center for Aerosol Calibration and Characterization and is a senior scientist at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS).

During the half-day session, Dr. Wiedensohler discussed the specific vulnerabilities of tropical regions to rising global temperatures and atmospheric changes. His expertise is backed by a distinguished international career, including guest professorships at Peking University in China and the University of the Philippines Diliman.

The lecture was attended by a select group of students and faculty members. Also in attendance were university officials, including Professor Emeritus and former CatSU President Dr. Minerva I. Morales, Vice President for Research, Extension, and Production Affairs (VPREPA) Dr. Roberto B. Barba Jr., CAF Dean Dr. Medie M. Lopez, and CIRCPDS Director Zyra Mae T. Tumala.
