Catanduanes State University (CatSU) President Dr. Gemma G. Acedo, represented by Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) Dr. Kristian Q. Aldea called on CatSU NSTP trainees to uphold purpose, empathy, and consistency as they begin their community immersion for the second semester.
Speaking at the January 29 orientation held at the CatSU Gymnasium, Dr. Aldea emphasized that NSTP is more than a classroom requirement, it is a bridge between academic lessons and real-life community experiences.
“It is very easy to view NSTP as just another commitment, another Saturday of waking up, but it is an opportunity to learn from the narratives and stories of the locals,” Dr. Aldea said.
He explained that empathy goes beyond giving back, requiring students to listen, understand, and engage with community issues, some of which can be addressed through teaching and learning.
The VPAA also stressed consistency, reminding trainees to stay focused on their goals despite challenges in the field.
The orientation included welcome remarks from LTS Coordinator Anthony T. Emerenciana, who highlighted the students’ role in service, leadership, and nation-building.
NSTP Director Dr. Ma. Antonia E. Rojas led the session proper, outlining the steps for community-based immersion, including conducting a needs assessment and coordinating with partner barangays.
The program prepares students under the Literacy Training Service and Civic Welfare Training Service programs to translate classroom knowledge into meaningful community impact.
