Lawmakers opened deliberations on two measures seeking to expand Catanduanes State University (CatSU) during the 2nd regular meeting of the House committee on higher and technical education, September 16.
CatSU President Dr. Gemma G. Acedo joined the session at the Batasan Complex in Quezon City as the panel took up House Bills 2498 and 2495, both introduced by Catanduanes Rep. Eulogio R. Rodriguez.
HB 2498 proposes the creation of a CatSU campus in Pandan. In his explanatory note, Cong. Rodriguez said the campus would cut financial and logistical burdens for students in northern Catanduanes by providing accessible higher education. It is also envisioned to roll out new academic and technical programs aligned with industry and local manpower needs.
HB 2495, meanwhile, seeks to upgrade the Panganiban satellite campus into a full-fledged campus with its own budgetary line item, giving it more autonomy to design and implement programs.
In a position paper, Dr. Acedo expressed her full support for the measures, stressing that both bills would ease the financial and logistical challenges faced by students from northern part of the province.
CHED Region V Director Dr. Demetrio P. Anduyan Jr. and CatSU Vice President for Administrative and Financial Affairs Dr. Arthur I. Tabirara also sat in on the hearing alongside Dr. Acedo.
