Key stakeholders rally behind creative council push in Catanduanes

The creative scene in Catanduanes just got a major jolt. Key government officials, private sector leaders, and cultural advocates converged on May 5 at the ARDCI Skydeck for the first organizational meeting of the Catanduanes Creative Development Council (CCDC)—a bold step aligned with the Philippine Creative Industries Development Act (RA 11904). This isn’t just another meeting. It’s the island’s official kickoff into the ₱1.72-trillion creative economy, which—according to the Philippine Statistics Authority—accounted for 7.1% of the country’s GDP in 2023. RA 11904 aims to protect Filipino creativity, grow homegrown talents, and professionalize the country's creative sectors—from performance to tech, heritage to design. At the table: soon-to-be ex-officio and regular members of the council, handpicked from local government offices, national agencies, and Catanduanes’ budding creative industries. Think: audiovisual media, interactive platforms, creative services, publishing, performance, design, cultural sites, and indigenous expressions—a full spectrum of imagination turned livelihood. Representing Catanduanes State University (CatSU) were Dir. Santos G. Sorra Jr. of the Center for Culture and Arts and Dir. Francis B. Tatel of the Center for Catandungan Heritage—both bringing institutional muscle to the culture table. But this wasn’t just about titles. Attendees rolled up sleeves to sketch initial plans for creative programs and projects that could fuel tourism, unlock investments, and finally give Catandunganon artists the spotlight they’ve long deserved. The CCDC is now set to become the island’s creative nerve center—an idea factory, a support hub, and a rallying point for anyone who believes culture is currency. And if the day’s turnout is any sign, Catanduanes is more than ready to make its creative mark.

‘Heritage is Not a Display—It’s a Duty,’ CatSU OIC President tells students

‘Heritage is Not a Display—It’s a Duty,’ CatSU OIC President tells students

“Heritage is not just preservation—it’s participation.” This was the bold challenge of Catanduanes State University (CatSU) OIC President Dr. Roberto B. Barba Jr. to nearly a hundred students during the university’s National Heritage Month celebration held yesterday at the JD Seminar Hall. Speaking before students, faculty, and staff, Dr. Barba called on the CatSU community to move beyond ceremonial observances and take active roles in living out Filipino identity. “Hindi sapat na i-display lang natin ang kultura. Dapat isabuhay natin ito,” Barba urged. “You don’t have to be a historian to protect heritage. Every time you speak your language, respect traditions, or trace our history—you’re keeping the flame alive.” Barba pressed students to use their platforms—vlogging, podcasting, or digital arts—to amplify untold local stories. He warned that culture dies when treated as a school requirement or yearly program, not as a daily choice. “Heritage will not survive if we only treat it as a requirement,” he stressed. “CatSU dreams global, but beats with a local heart.” He also called on faculty and staff to serve as "culture bearers" and challenged students to deepen their pride—not through nostalgia, but through action. The event kicked off CatSU’s slate of activities for National Heritage Month, led by its cultural steering committee and the Center for Catandungan Heritage headed by Director Francis B. Tatel.

Showcasing stunning creations made of eco-friendly materials like abaca fiber, the Catanduanes State University (CatSU) launched its weeklong Fashion Exhibit at the university lobby today, July 29, celebrating the creativity and talent of the university’s Garments, Fashion, and Design (GFD) students, alumni, and educators. Organized by the Center for Catandungan Heritage and the Arts (CCHA), the fashion exhibit will run until August 9, 2024, and offer a sensory journey as it features more than 30 garments with different unique and colorful designs. “Every piece is beautiful, and seeing them all evokes a sense of pride,” CatSU President Dr. Patrick Alain T. Azanza expressed as he graced the event this morning. Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Gemma G. Acedo also said that “these works are more than just products; they are our heritage and arts,” Among the highlights is the abaca-inspired costume worn by Ron Madrigal at the Ginoong Pilipinas 2024, which won Best National Costume, honoring the hard work of abacaleros and was crafted by Joven Añonuevo, a CatSU-GFD instructor, and Joshua Balbaderos, a CatSU-GFD student from Bohol.Another notable piece is an elegant Filipiniana gown created by GFD alumnus Julius Eric Cuison, which was recently featured on ABS-CBN News, transforming abaca fibers into a sophisticated fashion statement.During the exhibit’s opening, Añonuevo shared advice with aspiring fashion designers: “Pirmi natong pairalin ang puso at damdamin, bago ang isip, ta minsan sa isip, diyan may halong inggit.” Dr. Azanza expressed hope that these creations will gain further exposure through the university's official social media channels and publications like The Herald and The CatSU Statesman. “All these unique and beautiful pieces deserve to be seen by the world, as it speaks about the Catandunganon culture and arts. It represents who we are,” he concluded. According to CCHA Director Francis B. Tatel, the creations on display will also be featured in an upcoming fashion show next month.
