CatSU pioneers economic transformation with groundbreaking of Agro-Industrial and Economic Processing Zone, KIST Economic Zone

The Catanduanes State University (CatSU) marked a significant milestone in the province's economic development with the groundbreaking ceremony for the establishment of the Agro-Industrial and Economic Processing Zone and the Knowledge, Innovations, Science and Technology (KIST) Park on May 25, 2023.

The event was attended by esteemed guests and key stakeholders, including Governor Joseph C. Cua, Congressman Eulogio R. Rodriguez, and Director General Tereso O. Panga from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA).

During the ceremony, Governor Joseph C. Cua expressed his optimism about the future of Catanduanes.

"In the years to come, not only will we have more jobs available for Catandunganons, but we will also be self-sufficient, as new investors that will be attracted here will introduce technologically-advanced systems and operations that shall increase our agricultural output in the years to come,” Gov. Cua said.

He further highlighted the partnership between the local government and CatSU, emphasizing the collaborative efforts to realize the province's vision and aspirations.

“Maogma ako na sa pilang taon pa sanang paninirbihan ni Kuyang Doc Patrick digdi sa CatSU, pagmati mi, dekada na sa labi-labing pagbabag-o na nai-pundar ta sa unibersidad na ini. An napu-nan niyato na mga proyekto para sa probinsya sa paagi nin partnership nin lokal na gobyerno asin kan CatSU, padagos niyatong mamanteneron tanganing dakol pa sa mga bisyon asin pangarap ta para sa probinsya an mangyari asin magkatotoo.”

CatSU President Patrick Alain T. Azanza acknowledged the collective efforts that led to this groundbreaking moment. He thanked everyone who contributed to making this dream a reality.

“Ini po produkto kan pagtarabang tabang nita gabos,” Dr. Azanza said.

He also expressed his gratitude to the investors who have already shown interest in the economic zone, including two companies from the United States in the BPO sector, who are eager to invest in the island.

President Azanza further emphasized the mutual benefits that the economic zone will bring to the university and the locators.

He highlighted the provision in the contract with the investors, ensuring the inclusion of CatSU's teachers, researchers, and students in their economic activities. The integration of the university community into the locators' operations will create a unique learning and development opportunity for students and contribute to the advancement of the university's facilities and resources.

Director General Tereso O. Panga of PEZA commended CatSU and President Azanza for their shared vision and dedication to establishing the economic zone.

DG Panga highlighted the benefits that the economic zone will bring to the province, including job opportunities for CatSU graduates, increased local revenues for LGUs, and the potential for attracting foreign companies.

Meanwhile, Cong. Eulogio R. Rodriguez, the Lone District Representative of Catanduanes, hailed the establishment of the economic zone as a significant step towards the economic progress of the province. He praised President Azanza for his passion, innovative thinking, and dynamic approach, which have contributed to turning the dream of economic independence and prosperity for Catandunganons into a reality.

The event was attended by several government officials and representatives from various agencies, Regional Director Herbie Aguas from the Department of Tourism, Regional Director and CatSU Board of Regent Rommel R. Serrano, and Ms. Theresa D. Alcantara from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Engr. Marie Grace T. Molina - Provincial S&T Director of DOST, Ms. Maria Belma Q. Escueta - Provincial Director of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and Ms. Carmel B. Garcia - Provincial Tourism Operations Officer.

Also present were Mr. Huang Ying Je, the owner of Sintai Greentech Corp, and Municipal Mayors including Hon. Odilon F. Pascua of Bagamanoc, Hon. Cesar J. Robles of Panganiban, Hon. Emeterio Tarin of Viga, and Hon. Samuel V. Laynes of Virac, among other distinguished guests.

CatSU key officials were also present in the occasion, led by Dr. Gemma G. Acedo, VP for Academic Affairs, along with Dr. Rosana S. Abundo, FFU President, and the Deans and Directors of CatSU.

The groundbreaking ceremony symbolizes the beginning of a transformative journey for Catanduanes, as the establishment of the economic zone paves the way for economic growth, job creation, and knowledge exchange.
