Catanduanes State University (CatSU) has been recognized as one of the top three universities in the Bicol region by the FindUniversity.ph Philippines Universities Ranking. The ranking was based on the aggregated passing rates of each school in all board exams that their graduates participated in.FindUniversity.ph Philippines Universities Ranking is the first Philippine Universities Ranking that is based on relevant, up-to-date, and measurable data. The ranking takes into account over 60 different board exams conducted by the PRC. The results of these board exams are aggregated and used to rank each school in each board exam. The rankings are then aggregated for each school to come up with a Weighted Board Exams Ranking. The methodology used in the ranking involves aggregating the board exam passing rates of each school in each board exam, in the past four exams. Only first-time takers were counted. The schools were then ranked in each exam based on their aggregated passing rates. Schools with less than 10 examinees for a particular board exam during the past four exams were not ranked for that specific exam. The weighted position of each school in each board exam was calculated, with the highest-ranked school in an exam getting a score of 100, and a school in the 10th percentile receiving a score of 90, and so on. Finally, the average weighted position of each school in all board exams that school was ranked in was calculated. The official ranking presented by FindUniversity.ph Philippines Universities Ranking contains schools that were ranked in at least seven board exams. The ranking takes into account the different campuses of the same university, ranking them separately since they differ in location, facilities, faculty, and programs offered.CatSU's placement in the top three universities in the Bicol region is a testament to the school's commitment to providing quality education to its students. The ranking highlights the school's success in preparing its graduates for their respective board exams and ensuring that they excel in their chosen fields. #fjbt

In a night of celebration for the unsung heroes in the medical field, one Catandunganon stood out from the rest. Dressed in a dapper coat and tie rather than his usual hospital scrubs, Romeo Valeza received the prestigious Bronze award in the Vascular Access Nurse of the Year category from the British Journal of Nursing (BJN) at the Banking Hall in London, United Kingdom on March 8, 2023, making him the only Catandungan to win such an award that night. Valeza, who hails from Virac, Catanduanes, currently serves as an Apheresis Charge Nurse at Hammersmith Hospital under Imperial College Healthcare Trust. His introduction of a unique apheresis procedure using ultrasound guidance in 2017 was a breakthrough from the usual use of femoral lines and has since created a significant impact on his patients’ lives. His outstanding dedication, excellence in his work, compassion, and unmatched work ethic made him worthy of receiving the award, which recognizes the achievements of vascular access nurses responsible for progress, continued professional development, and improved patient care within vascular access. Furthermore, Valeza is a highly skilled hematology-oncology nurse who worked as a lead nurse for apheresis in a major NHS hospital in London. This type of work specializes in providing patients with access to their circulatory system to perform red cell exchange treatment. As this work requires rigorous focus, attention to detail, and expertise, they are often expected to become miracle workers who make even the most impossible cases possible. During his time, he has performed miracles and helped countless patients receive safe and effective vascular access. His list of expertise goes on, as he is also skilled in bone marrow aspiration and ultrasound-guided peripheral cannulation. With more than 30 years of experience in stem-cell transplantation, chemotherapy administration, and general surgical nursing, he has already acquired numerous awards and commendations, such as Outstanding Alumnus, Presidential Awardee, ASFA’s Choosing Wisely Initiative Champion, Terumo’s Advancing Apheresis award (runner-up), and the most recent BJN Vascular Nurse of the Year bronze medal award. In addition, he is a published researcher with two abstract publications in the Journal of Clinical Apheresis and British Society for Haematology, earning him recognition and awards in the UK and the USA. However, before all the commendations and accolades, he was once a student from the small island of Catanduanes at Catanduanes State University, which was then Catanduanes State Colleges. He graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1990, with a full scholarship from the Gabriel Sorra Scholarship Foundation. His time at the University served as his stepping stone and training ground for his chosen field. Later on, he pursued a Master of Arts in Nursing at the University of Santo Tomas under a full scholarship from the Philippine Civil Service Commission Local Scholarship Program. He then enrolled in different universities in London to continue his professional development. As an alumnus of CatSU and the College of Health Sciences (CHS), he consistently supports the College’s agenda of providing quality nursing education to its students by participating in various donation drives organized by the College. He continues to be an inspiration to students, particularly student nurses, as well as his nursing colleagues and fellow alumni, proving that even a former student from a small island can stand out in the world.
The English Language and Speech Communication Center (ELSCOM) and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUMSS) organized an assessment of the English Language Curriculum for Global Competitiveness, today, April 24, 2023. The event involved faculty members of the Languages Department and language teachers from the College of Education, Laboratory Schools, and CatSU Panganiban Campus.Topics discussed included Global Language Standards, presented by Prof. Romeleen Go-Vela, Program Chair of Bachelor of Arts in English Language (BAEL); an overview of CEFR by Prof. Reashiela L. Khan, Director of ELSCOM; CEFR-Based Competencies by Prof. Francis B. Tatel, Faculty of the Languages Department, and a review of CatSU's CEFR-based English-related syllabi. The afternoon schedule featured a workshop, presentations, and a SWOT analysis.CatSU President, Dr. Patrick Alain T. Azanza, graced the opening program and emphasized the importance of internalizing education at CatSU for achieving the university's vision.“The internalization of education at CatSU is crucial for achieving our vision for CatSU, and the Language Center plays a significant role in this process. We wanted it to be on par with global standards with those of other top universities worldwide,” Dr. Azanza said. “A notable concern in the field of Human Resources is the lack of effective communication skills. Many individuals may be skilled and intelligent, but their inability to express themselves effectively puts them at a disadvantage compared to graduates from other universities. This is what we need to address in our university,” he added. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, also known as CEFR, CEF, or CEFRL, serves as a standard guideline for evaluating the progress of foreign language learners throughout Europe and, increasingly, in other nations. The framework's primary purpose is to simplify the assessment of language proficiency for educational institutions and employers when considering candidates for educational admission or employment. #FJBT
